LEAP 1: Create Propaganda

Can you make someone love a topic or hate it through the use of language and images? Use what you are learning about propaganda to create it yourself.

Steps in the Process

  1. Focus on a Topic or Issue of Interest to You. Select a topic of interest from the Do Something website. Ask permission of the instructor if you would like to choose another topic that’s not on this list. Learn what you can about the topic and issue in order to develop a plan for your propaganda initiative.

2. Create to Learn. Create an original form of propaganda to accomplish the goal of the campaign. Choose from these options:

  • blog post
  • press release
  • infographic
  • collection of 5 original memes
  • poster
  • video, 60–90 seconds
  • radio ad
  • collection of 5 original social media posts

3. Comment on and Analyze Your Work. Reflect on the experience of creating propaganda. Write an essay about your work, explaining your creative choices and strategy. Who was your target audience? How did you apply what you learned about propaganda? What did you like or dislike about the experience? (Word count: 1,000–1,500 words)

Publish Your Work

You publish your work on the class publication, the Propaganda COM 416 Fall 2023 Medium website. Here are the steps in the process.

  1. Create an account on Medium using your URI email.
  2. Place your Medium user name on this LIST OF COM416 Blog Writers
  3. Your instructor will then make you a designated writer for the class blog.
  4. Create your propaganda and then compose your essay.
  5. When you have completed your work, follow these instructions to submit your work to the class publication. More information is available here.

Criteria for Evaluation

I demonstrate my understanding of propaganda by creating original propaganda.

I have written an essay to accompany my propaganda that explains my creative choices, production process, and rhetorical strategy. I apply theories, ideas and information from the course readings in constructing my work.

My essay is well-written and well-organized, with no spelling or grammar errors. Expectation: 1,000–1,500 words.

I have given my essay a title and used at least 1 image in my blog post. I use a Works Cited list to identify the information sources I used in my work. I have embedded or linked my complete work (propaganda + essay) to my Medium blog post, which I have added as a contribution to the class blog.
