In September 2017, the beautiful island of Puerto Rico was severely devastated by Hurricane Maria. This deadly category 5 hurricane affected many Caribbean islands including Dominica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and The Bahamas. It was the second category 5 hurricane ever and the deadliest hurricane from the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season (Wikipedia). Unfortunately, Puerto Rico was the most affected country and the government has struggled for the past 6 years to restore the country to its previous state. As a Latina myself, this topic appealed to me because I have experienced firsthand the devastating effects of a hurricane in my own family. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, I remember how our government would try to relocate vulnerable populations in an effort to increase survival rates but it would not compensate for the residence damages afterward.
